Essential Gear for the Upcoming Camping Season: Your Ultimate Checklist
Camping season is here, and whether you're a first-time tent camper or have been camping for years, having the right gear can make or break your trip. At Set Your Sites, we’ve learned a thing or two about what you really need and just want you to start. 🏕️ Shelter & Sleeping Gear
If it is your first camping trip, plan to go for a day...win the day and stay for the next night! Here’s just what you’ll need and nothing more:
✅ Tent – Choose a tent suited for your group size and the weather conditions. A three-season tent works for most trips, but winter campers should invest in a four-season tent. You may want to have an extra pole or two, we have seen tents trashed and trips ruined because they needed a back up pole.
✅ Ground Tarp – Protects your tent from moisture and sharp objects.
✅ Sleeping Bag – Check temperature ratings to ensure warmth in various conditions. We recommend a 20°F bag for most trips. Check out Sierra trading company. We found XL bags for our tall family at a much cheaper price.
✅ Sleeping Pad or Air Mattress – Adds insulation and comfort for a better night’s sleep. Definitely test them out before you leave the store, if you lay on the pad and you think you are still on the ground...pass.
✅ Pillow —compact, inflatable, or memory foam options work great and can be great for the hammock.
🔥 Cooking & Food Essentials
It is all about the food. Pack these essentials to cook up a storm:
✅ Camping Stove or Grill – We love the Blackstone for easy campsite meals! A compact propane stove works well, too.
✅ Fuel – Bring enough propane, butane, or wood for your cooking setup.
✅ Cookware – A lightweight pot, frying pan, and kettle should cover most needs.
✅ Utensils – Don’t forget tongs, a spatula, and a sturdy knife.
✅ Plates, Bowls & Cups – Opt for durable, reusable sets.
✅ Cooler & Ice Packs – Keep perishable food fresh longer.
✅ Food Storage & Bear-Proof Containers – Essential for keeping wildlife away from your snacks.
✅ Water Jugs & Filtration System – Hydration is key! Always carry extra water and a filter for backup.
Pro Tip: Pack easy, no-cook meals for drive days! Stacy swears by grab-and-go meals to limit stops on travel days and avoid showing up at the campsite hangry.
🛠️ Safety & Emergency Gear
No one plans for mishaps, but being prepared makes all the difference. Always pack:
✅ First Aid Kit – Bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and blister care are must-haves.
✅ Multi-Tool or Knife – For cutting, fixing, and emergency situations. I can't tell you how many times a random multi-tool has come in handy inside and outside the camper.
✅ Headlamp or Flashlight – With extra batteries (because losing light at night is no fun).
✅ Fire Starters – Waterproof matches, lighters, and fire starters to keep the campfire going.
🧳 Clothing & Personal Items
Dressing in layers is key for changing temperatures. Be sure to pack:
✅ Moisture-Wicking Base Layers – Keeps sweat away and helps regulate body temperature.
✅ Insulating Layer (Fleece or Down Jacket) – Essential for chilly mornings and evenings.
✅ Waterproof Jacket & Pants – Because rain can show up uninvited.
✅ Hiking Boots or Sturdy Shoes – Comfortable, weather-appropriate footwear makes all the difference.
✅ Extra Socks & Undergarments – Dry feet = happy camper.
✅ Yetis for everyone – So we are a Yeti family but you know what I mean, make sure everyone has their own water bottle for refills.
✅ Sunscreen & Bug Spray – Don't forget tick protection...they can be a camping trip ender.
